Mindfulness and Meditation: the fundamentals in a five-week course

4 February, 2022, 11:00 am - 4 March, 2022, 12:30 pm

An intro to a simple practical approach to feeling more grounded, resilient, calm and clear-thinking

“I feel much more confident that I can be patient and loving as a carer.” “I can’t believe how different I feel from when I came in today.” “I feel so peaceful – I had forgotten how simple it can be.”

As we bring our mindfulness course to a close and my students are invited to share how they’re feeling, these are the sorts of things they say.

Whether you’re feeling scattered and running on empty day after day, or are simply wanting to pause and pay attention to a quieter part of yourself, this short course offers a way of approaching life that can support and nourish you no matter your circumstances.

What is this course about?

The five weeks will introduce:

  • the fundamentals of mindfulness and meditation, and how it is they have so much potential for transformation
  • the “how” of meditating, with guided meditations to help us slow down, calm our clamouring mind, and feel more centred and balanced
  • a range of practices that can be used at any time to check in with ourselves, nurture ourselves with a little self-care, stay steady in tricky moments, and be really present for everyday moments of pleasure and appreciation
  • the skill involved in paying attention and staying focused (even with distractions, and even in the presence of thoughts that this will never work for us)
  • strategies we can employ when faced with challenging experiences (both whilst we sit in meditation as well as in everyday life) so that we don’t get sucked into unhelpful cycles of thinking.

Each class will include a guided meditation, discussion, and mindfulness practices you can use any time anywhere. After every class you’ll receive an emailed summary to remind you what we covered, inspire you to keep going, and provide you practical support through audio links to practices.

The approach and style of the classes

Everything we do in class is entirely optional, and the meditations can always be adapted to suit you. If, for example, you have sciatica, you might want to stand or lie down instead of sit. If you want to open your eyes or simply stop the meditation, you are so welcome. You might want to share a lot one week and not talk another week. If we could simply show up for ourselves each week, show care and respect to others, and bring an openheartedness to class, that would be brilliant.

The intention is that you will

  • enjoy this course, the sense of community, and the beautiful surroundings of the Botanic Gardens;
  • leave with an understanding of what it means to be present;
  • gain confidence knowing you can draw on mindfulness strategies throughout your day; and
  • will leave with the know-how of a formal meditation practice you can use for the rest of your life.

If you have any questions about the suitability of this course for you, a friend or those you work with, you can reach me at hello@cathgrey.com.

When are the classes?

  • The five weekly classes run on Fridays 4 February – 4 March 2022.
  • Classes run for 90 mins.

Where are the classes?

  • We’ll be in the Display Room, which is at the entrance to the Botanic Gardens in Coffs Harbour. Look for the glass door on the left.
  • Doors open ten minutes before we start.

What do I need to bring?

  • We’ll be sitting on chairs but you’re welcome to bring meditation stools or cushions.
  • A yoga mat or something comfy to lie on would be useful for lying down practices or if you want to change posture, but it’s also fine to remain seated.
  • You might want to bring water and a journal to use for reflection after class.

What should I wear?

  • You don’t have to wear anything special. It’s okay to come in work clothes as long as you have room at the waist to breathe easily.

Can I book now and pay later?

  • Yes. Payment needs to be received by the end of 21 January 2022. Email me with your name and mobile number, and I’ll book you in and give you my banking details. hello@cathgrey.com

Let me know if there’s anything else you need from me. I look forward to being with you!
